The March 2016 study, titled “Parents Who Supply Sips of Alcohol in Early Adolescence: A Prospective Study of Risk Factors,” says, “Parents are a major supplier of alcohol to adolescents, often initiating use with sips.” Those parents believe their children would anyways be exposed to unsupervised alcohol use among their peers.

“However, they may be wrong in their belief, and may be prematurely introducing their children to a behavior that may have marked risks,” cautions the study, published in the journal Pediatrics. The researchers feel that despite harms of adolescent alcohol use, not enough research has been done to address the antecedents of such parental supply.

What makes parents supply the first sip of alcohol to their children?

Parents who perceive that their child is mingling with substance-using peers are more likely to supply it and are more lenient about alcohol access. The misconception and apprehensions among parents about their children’s proclivity to take to alcohol and other substances among peers are grossly miscued.

“The results show that parental perceptions of whether their child engages with substance-using peers are a significant predictor of parental supply of sips, along with home access and lenient alcohol rules,” the researchers said.

Parents feel that providing small sips of alcohol would act as a deterrent and protect their children from drinking with peers, which does not hold true as per the investigators. “Parental supply of sips may be motivated by the belief that smaller quantities will protect their child from unsupervised alcohol use with peers and associated harms, such as binging,” the study says.

However, the researchers feel that this “parental supply may increase adolescent perception of parental alcohol permissiveness, which increases the risk of early drinking initiation.”

“The findings of this study are important because we identify prospective predictors of parental supply of sips of alcohol, one of the first stages of drinking,” the researchers said. Many of the children have their first brush with alcohol even before reaching adolescence. This sipping to drinking and then to binge drinking would soon become drinking their parents under the table.

There were, however, certain limitations to this study as it was not able to assess the long-term associations of early exposure to sips. To arrive at a conclusion and more definitive answers to this, more research is needed, the researchers said.

“Replication is needed, and research is required on whether supply of sips quickly transitions to supply of whole drinks, and whether predictors of supply differ with increasing adolescent age and alcohol experience,” they said.
